  • Spoke with a middle school vice principal about the gifted education certificate program
  • Met with the intermediate school principal and the core content area supervisors to discuss the departmentalization of the 5th grade
  • Made a placement decision for a student moving into the district for 9th grade

  • Edited information provided by our Colonial Day town crier

  • Met with a curriculum writing team that is having trouble meeting my expectations to try to clear up misunderstanding
Intermediate School:
  • Met with a vice principal to go over Colonial Day logistics

  • Sent out a message regarding AP summer assignments
  • Screened applications for the open high school position(s)
Out of District:
  • Attended a meeting with the County DOE office to talk about expectations for using student achievement data in teacher evaluations in the future

Intermediate School:

Board Office:
  • Attended a supervisors' meeting
  • Requested information from elementary REACH teachers regarding their supply orders for 12-13
  • Began working on annual evaluations for two high school teachers
  • Created a draft schedule of annual evaluation meetings
  • Responded to a question from a possible partner for a summer PD event
  • Scheduled an appointment with a textbook vender
  • Began working on the paperwork for approval of a summer reading book

Wednesday, April 18

Board Office:
  • Attended the principals/supervisors meeting
  • Responded to questions from teachers about the annual performance review process
  • Forwarded information about the potential student teacher to the high school teacher who may become a mentor
  • Provided feedback to the high school principal about the revised independent study procedures we've been working on
  • Reviewed curriculum and responded to concerns from the teachers working on it by scheduling a meeting with them tomorrow afternoon
  • Completed some work for the Rutgers course I'm taking
 
Middle School:
  • Held a post-observation conference with the student teacher I observed earlier this week
 
Intermediate School:
  • Popped in to see a REACH class work for the first time with a new set of Chromebooks that we were able to purchase. They were using them in small groups to take a tour of Ellis Island.
 
Out of District:
  • Attended/facilitated a workshop run by the Northwest region of NJASCD on the topic of the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts

Tuesday, April 17

Board Office:
  • Sent a recognition letter to the high school teacher who helped with Candidates' Night and sent copies to his principal and personnel file
  • Typed up the observation report for the student teacher I observed yesterday
  • Attended a district leadership team meeting to analyze new data available to districts in New Jersey that measures students' growth from one year to the next on standardized assessments in language arts and mathematics
  • Edited the form being used by the LPDC to gather information from PLCs
  • Met with key people to finalize plans for the REACH awards dinner
  • Prepared to begin the process of annual performance reviews and e-mailed the information to all 36 teachers for whom I am responsible during this process
  • Came back late this evening to get the election results live. The budget passed by nearly a 2:1 margin.

Monday, April 16

Middle School:
  • Met for a pre-observation conference and observation with a student teacher
 
Board Office:
  • Responded to an e-mail from a high school teacher regarding upcoming absences due to her responsibilities as an advisor for an extracurricular organization
  • Scheduled a time to meet with the advisor to the REACH senior internships and my secretary to work out the details for the REACH awards dinner
  • Responded to an e-mail from a parent regarding REACH placements
  • Prepared for Candidates' Night
  • Screened resumes for the high school social studies opening
 
High School:
  • Spoke with a high school teacher on the phone about the scheduling of curriculum writing for the summer
  • Spoke with a high school teacher about the possibility of her hosting a student teacher next year
  • Met with students to read through the script and discuss the logistics of Candidates' Night
  • Spoke with a parent who has twins – one qualified for REACH screening and one did not.
  • Came back in the evening to host Candidates' Night. All 5 candidates for Board of Education attended and we had a decent turnout. The students did a great job and the current Board members in attendance agreed that it was a worthwhile event.

Thursday, April 5

Board Office:
  • Prepared for an interview
  • Corresponded with a high school teacher regarding curriculum writing
  • Completed a few required trainings online
 
High School:
  • Interviewed a wonderful veteran candidate from outside New Jersey for the open high school position
 
Board Office:
  • Sent the social studies weekly update
  • Sent an e-mail to members of the social studies program evaluation committee regarding hours of professional development credit
  • Sent an e-mail to the facilitators of PLCs about how to count hours for the annual evaluation process
  • Drafted a "yes" letter for a student who is being placed into the REACH program
  • Responded to a parent's e-mail with specific questions about one of the tools we use for placement decisions in REACH
  • Worked on writing the script for Candidates' Night
 
I was out on spring break from Friday, April 6 through Monday, April 16. I did work for one of those days by attending a work session of the state model curriculum writing team.

Wednesday, April 4

Elementary School:
  • Provided administrative coverage in the absence of the school's principal
  • Reviewed high school department's monthly reports
  • Greeted students as they arrived to school on the buses
  • Reviewed lesson plans
 
Board Office:
  • Attended a meeting about revising course codes to meet a new state system's requirements
  • Spoke with a candidate for the open position at the high school. Although I was not planning to begin interviews yet, this person is from out of state and happens to be in the area this week.
  • Returned phone calls regarding REACH placement decisions
 
High School:
  • Attended the high school supervisors' meeting
  • Worked on the initial scheduling for next year

Tuesday, April 3

Intermediate School:
  • Facilitated a meeting of the Colonial Day planning committee
 
Teachers' Association Headquarters:
  • Attended a half-day meeting of the Local Professional Development Committee
 
Board Office:
  • Spoke with someone who helps with REACH evaluations about a student testing issue
  • Watched a Department of Education webinar while doing other work
  • Provided some initial feedback to curriculum writing teams working on electives at the high school
  • Returned parent phone calls regarding REACH placement decisions
  • Worked on adding up the hours for the social studies program evaluation committee members

Monday, April 2

Middle School:
  • Attended a training session for NJASK administration

Intermediate School:
  • Attended a meeting of the Colonial Day planning committee
Board Office:
  • Provided feedback to a high school teacher who requested feedback on a parent question
  • Sent information to the social studies program evaluation team about participating in the textbook review process
  • Sent an e-mail to the middle school teachers about the decided direction of the middle school curriculum
  • Drafted an e-mail to all 5th grade teachers about Colonial Day
  • Reviewed applications for the high school teacher position
  • Wrote and submitted my monthly report
  • Completed a few mandatory trainings
High School:
  • Met with a teacher to discuss his thoughts about his perception that morale at the school is at an all-time low
  • Sent a survey to high school teachers asking for their teaching preferences for next year
Board Office:
  • Spoke with a professor from Princeton University about a summer professional development program I am trying to start that would create a two day Revolutionary War series - one day of classroom instruction and one day of in-the-field exploration at sites throughout New Jersey
  • Participated in a webinar with other participants in the Gifted Education graduate certificate program
  • Wrote a paper for the Rutgers graduate program
  • Processed registrations for an upcoming NJASCD event

Wednesday, March 28

Board Office:
  • Completed paperwork for reimbursement for expenses from the ASCD trip
  • Competed paperwork for textbook adoption of a book for Genocide and Holocaust
  • Sent a reminder e-mail to the candidates regarding Candidates' Night
  • Submitted a professional development request for upcoming events
  • Followed up with a high school vice principal about a teacher issue
  • Went through old e-mails to clear some out
  • Completed mileage reimbursement paperwork for the DOE model curriculum project
  • Responded to a question about economics textbooks from a colleague in another district

High School:
  • Attended a meeting of the district's technology committee
Middle School:
  • Went to meet with a teacher to do a student observation but found the teacher was absent
Board Office:
  • Sent an e-mail to previous participants in Candidates' Night to try to recruit more participants for this one
  • Worked on developing text adoption guidelines to send to potential vendors for our upcoming textbook review
  • Attended the first meeting of the district committee tasked with determining our future teacher evaluation system in accordance with new requirements from the state DOE
